Ever since my radio show Friday Night Flashbacks ended on KCPR, there has been something missing in my life. Those two hours spent playing music for the community was so special and I didn’t realize how much I missed it until recently.
It didn’t matter that I had the worst week at work, had a headache, or felt completely miserable–stepping inside that control room changed whatever mood I was feeling into a rush of endorphin splendor. It was like a drug–suddenly I was high on something and feeling euphoric. Even if I arrived in the studio two minutes before I went live, it was two hours I got to completely focus on something I loved.
Unfortunately, as most of us know, all good things eventually come to an end.
The Cal Poly Journalism department decided the station needed to be completely student run. While I do agree with this sentiment since it is the university radio station, it bumped a few of us alumni off the air. I was upset at first, but then realized it was the right decision. I shouldn’t be taking up a spot that could be filled by a student looking to learn new skills and wanting to participate in her college education. I have always believed that everything happens for a reason and this one would reveal itself later down the road.
That reveal didn’t take long because I was able to join Stephanie West and her all girl DJ collective called SLOGrrrl. Since it started in 2016, SLOGrrrl has gained a reputation around the county and we are now spinning quite a few events. Sometimes DJ Steph will host alone and sometimes I will host with her. One of my favorite events is the Hoppy Hour at Studios on the Park in Paso Robles. Sponsored by Firestone, its a great couple of hours where I get to play music for the crowd while they drink the new Firestone brew and eat some great local cuisine. The next Hoppy Hour is scheduled for Friday September 7, 5:30-7:30. Below is a current calendar of upcoming SLOGrrrl events. Be sure to come out and see us.
Regardless, I feel SLOGrrrl fills that void that was left from being on the air. I am also putting together a weekly podcast with a friend of mine that will launch in August. I am very excited about it as it has nothing to do with music and everything to do with having fun and showing off my comedy. Keep an eye out for the launch date.
